| Why Nurses Still Must Learn to Delegate |
| NurseLeader has just published Ruth Hansten’s article titled Why Nurses Still Must Learn to Delegate in their October 2008 edition.
Delegation is a critical skill for nurses. Yet many nurse leaders can trace their delegation skills back to on-the-job training or trial and error. With today’s staffing shortages, it’s becoming increasingly important to ensure that nurses are comfortable in delegating to assistive personnel.
In this article Ruth correlates the Relationship and Results Oriented HealthcareTM best practices to the nursing skills of delegation, supervision, and teamwork. Citing the related field research and current literature, this article reveals how these best practices are absolutely essential to improvements in nursing practice.
RROHCTM organizations that are planning for Magnet status and implementing evidence based practice will discover reinforcement of the RROHCTM best practices in this article.

Healthcare leaders continually strive to improve quality, yet staff shortages, regulations, interdisciplinary conflicts, and overwhelming complexity subvert their efforts. This guide is a roadmap to implementing the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare philosophy and bundle of best practices. The RROHC professional model of care provides tools to create transdisciplinary partnerships with patients and families to facilitate the journey to their preferred outcomes. Featuring healthcare organizations’ stories of success, this manual distills expert professional practice into steps beginning with establishing relationships with care providers and patients at the bed side, culminating in improved patient satisfaction and employee engagement. Restoring a sense of purpose, nurse retention and recruitment soars. Throughout the continuum of care, this book offers a conceptual framework for excellence through improved connection with patients, enhanced critical thinking, and advanced teamwork. We have just returned from sunny Tucson and the RROHC Master Coach invitational. What a great group of leaders! Participants came from Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan, and Washington to enjoy the lovely atmosphere of suguaro cactus forests, mountains, and pools with good food and interesting companions. Master coach participants practiced new coaching skills, learned more about themselves from their 360 results, and evaluated their organizations’ RROHC progress. Each individual created action steps for the next months until we update each other in December. Kimberly and I enjoyed being with you all and we are always amazed by the brilliance that emerges from these groups! Thank you for participating! Ruth

You can see that fun was had by all; what a great group! Participants from six organizations across the country, from Washington State (Grays Harbor, Harborview, and Harrison) and from Oregon (Kaiser Sunnyside), CT (Norwalk), and Ohio (Marion General). We worked hard and also took time to build our teams and our online community of RROHC facilitators. I must admit my face hurt from laughing with the presentations on Thursday morning! What a creative and intelligent group! Linda Pullins co-facilitated the training session and everyone appreciated her wisdom. We will continue to build on the content in the manuals over the next months. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn with you all! Ruth Hansten

We at Hansten Healthcare PLLC, of course knew these facts before (being “in the know” folks), but did you see that Kimberly is making national news!? We are SO proud of Kimberly representing us, nurses, and healthcare improvement on the NATIONAL AHA Committee on Governance as well as the STATE CHAIR of the Governing Boards for WSHA as well as chairing the Harborview Medical Center’s Board of Directors. Her stellar leadership skills have been recognized by governing boards as well as by the hospital executives, and as you may all know this is not an easy feat for a female and a nurse. Congratulations Kimberly! Ruth & Marcie
(FROM the AONE bulletin)

Happy 2008! If you haven’t recently checked out the blog entries, please do! There is amazingly rich content with ideas from implementing, educating, and celebrating RROHC principles, as well as some practical guides and tools.
We look forward to beginning another RROHC Level 1 Certification program on January 28th, and holding another Level 2 Facilitator Intensive Training session in Port Ludlow in early March. Email or call Marcie now to hold spaces: Marcie@hansten.com. We are also
finalizing negotiations for an October long weekend Master Coach training course in Tuscon.
With the current emphasis on transforming care at the bedside and improving patient safety and participation in care, we expect many more organizations to join our RROHC community in 2008.
We enjoy working with all of you; there is nothing better than like minds and hearts working together to great purposes! Ruth
